چکیده

The Chandrayaan-2 Large Area Soft X-ray spectrometer (CLASS) is due to be launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 2014. It will map the elemental composition of the lunar surface, building on the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray spectrometer (C1XS) heritage. CLASS will use an array of e2v technologies CCD236 swept charge devices (SCD) providing an active detector area of approximately 64 cm 2 , almost three times the active area of C1XS which used the first generation of SCD, the CCD54. The CCD236 is designed as a soft X-ray detector, 0.8 keV to 10 keV, and benefits from improvements in design to allow for increased detector area, a reduction in split X-ray events and improvements to radiation hardness. This paper describes the investigation into the performance requirements of the CCD236, focussing on an optimisation of the energy resolution of a device irradiated to the estimated worse case end of life proton fluence.

Proton Radiation Damage Study of the Next Generation of Swept Charge Devices

The first generation of Swept Charge Device (SCD) the e2v technologies plc CCD54 was used in the Demonstration of a Compact Imaging X-ray Spectrometer (D-CIXS) launched in 2003 and again in the Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) instrument currently in orbit around the Moon. The main source of decreased energy resolution in both cases is proton damage, from trapped and solar protons respec...

Proton irradiation of a swept charge device at cryogenic temperature and the subsequent annealing

A number of studies have demonstrated that a room temperature proton irradiation may not be sufficient to provide an accurate estimation of the impact of the space radiation environment on detector performance. This is a result of the relationship between defect mobility and temperature, causing the performance to vary subject to the temperature history of the device from the point at which it ...

The C1XS X-ray Spectrometer on Chandrayaan-1

The Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) is a compact X-ray spectrometer for the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) Chandrayaan-1 lunar mission. It exploits heritage from the D-CIXS instrument on ESA’s SMART-1 mission. As a result of detailed developments to all aspects of the design, its performance as measured in the laboratory greatly surpasses that of D-CIXS. In comparison with SM...

THE CHANDRAYAAN-2 LARGE AREA SOFT X-RAY SPECTROMETER (CLASS). V.Radhakrishna

Introduction: The CLASS experiment on Chandrayaan-2, the second Indian lunar mission, aims to map the abundance of the major rock forming elements on the lunar surface using the technique of X-ray fluorescence during solar flare events. CLASS is a continuation of the successful C1XS [1] XRF experiment on Chandrayaan-1. CLASS is designed to provide lunar mapping of elemental abundances with a no...

The scientific rationale for the C1XS X-ray spectrometer on India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission to the moon

The UK-built Chandrayaan-1 X-ray Spectrometer (C1XS) will fly as an ESA instrument on India’s Chandrayaan-1 mission to the Moon, launched in October 2008. C1XS builds on experience gained with the earlier D-CIXS instrument on SMART-1, but will be a scientifically much more capable instrument. Here we describe the scientific objectives of this instrument, which include mapping the abundances of ...
